The marine industry supports more than 10,000 direct workers and many indirect workers. The industry grew by 2.6% which is close to the Canadian average industry growth of 2.7% last year. This means that not only is the industry large it is also expanding.
Are there only jobs in the Lower Mainland?
B.C. has a strong marine industry spread all along the coastline as well as the lakes and rivers of the interior. While the majority of businesses are located in the Lower Mainland and southern Vancouver Island there are marine employment opportunities anywhere you find water.
Will I have to join a union?
The majority of the companies in the marine industry are smaller and non-union.
Do I have to have a background in the marine industry to be employed?
Many of the skills used in the marine industry are transferable from other non-marine jobs. For example, experience in cabinetry can lead to deck work, electrical engine work can be applied to boat engines, upholstery and sewing experience can be used for sail making. This industry is flexible with a variety of employment for a skilled worker.
